ANATOLY OF THE GOMDARS
By Brian Kluepfel
It was a time when wolves left their tracks everywhere in the forest and the fish swam in so great a number that all the rivers shone silver and blue. The birds were the clocks, and the sunrise and sunset were the curtains of the world. Plants were medicines and flowers, the perfume and decoration of all the people. Apples served as a toothbrush and a rainstorm, a shower.
Adults made rules, and children tried to break them—isn’t that always the way? Everyone woke when the sun touched their eyelids and were quick to sleep when it crawled again behind the mountains to put on its nightshirt so it could rise again white in the inky sky.
